------------------------------------
New York City after 9/11, bolstered by intensive pro-Israel organizing, became a cauldron of Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism. Constant racial profiling of Muslims by police and media fuels the specter of “Middle Eastern terror”, which in turn is used to justify U.S. wars and U.S. support for Israel's apartheid against Palestinians.
Queers are drawn into the fray as Israel actively “pinkwashes” its apartheid by touting its (meager) support for gay rights, mainly as a way to demonize Muslim and/or Arab people.
IN THIS CONVERSATION, Palestinian queer activist Haneen Maikey and NYC queer Muslim activist Saadia Toor sift through the links between racist Islamophobia and queers: from New York, to the U.S., to Israel/Palestine. They will also discuss how queer challenges to empire-building can make deep changes.
